Sick Bay #2 – Negh’Var from Huntersorce

The next admission to the sick bay is a very interesting one.  We’re going to give a check-up to the popular Negh’Var deck that recently got some nice buffs in the last patch.  This is not just any Negh’Var deck though.  This one was submitted by Huntersorce who has reached as high as number 1 on the ladder with this very deck, and was one of the first players to have great success with this deck.

I’d like to give a big thank you to Huntersorce for sharing his deck.  Let’s see if we are able to offer any suggestions for what is already a very successful deck.    His list is great as is, so this might come down to personal preference and play style.

I spent 3 days playing nothing but Negh’Var, starting with the list Huntersorce supplied to me, and making some tweaks here and there.  It is an amazingly fast and explosive deck, and very fun to play.

Crew

Let’s take a look at the crew first.

Colonel Worf 1
K’Ehleyr 1
Tarah 1
Gorn 1
J’dan 1
Kor 1*
Kruge 1*
Kurn 1*

This is a solid crew and I understand the thought process behind the crew chosen, but I do have a slightly different take on it.

There were some games where Col. Worf was amazing, giving a ship +3/+1.  My favorite was to play a 1 energy ship on turn one, use the Dilithium Crystal and play Worf that same turn, leaving a 4/2 on the board on turn 1.  The problem I had with him is he is a conditional crew in that he can only be played after using your ability.  The way I played the deck was to only use the ultimate ability, unless I desperately needed a card, so Col. Worf rarely got the bonus stats for me.  I actually took him out for a Grebnedlog, which is 1 energy for 2/1.  For the same energy cost I know I am guaranteed +2 attack, instead of sometimes +1 and sometimes +3.

I took this thought process through much of the crew, opting more for consistency.  Another one is K’Ehleyr.  She is only 1 energy, but has 0 attack bonus to start and gives +1 attack for each ship in Stealth.  Her potential is high, but I found I wanted something with some more consistency.

Tarah, Kruge and Kurn are all board control cards. They are great at getting rid of a bunch of guardians or opposing haste ships, but I thought, for this deck, they were either a little slow, with Kruge and Kurn or not impactful enough with Tarah.

The crew package I ended up using, and found worked well for me was this:

Elim Garak 1
Rom 1
Grebnedlog 1
Vixis 1
Ardra 1
Gorn 1
J’dan 1
Kor 1

I have the same number of crew in the deck, which I believe is the right number.  Instead of Kruge and Kurn I am playing Garak and Rom.  They serve a similar function in that they remove a ship that is in your way and slow the opponent down.  The difference is they are both 0 energy to play, so they don’t slow you down in the process.  I really liked Rom in here since he is also a 2/2 crew.  He can nullify a guardian, kill a crew member and make a ship much more aggressive all at the same time.

This deck is all about going face, and I found this crew package to work very well for me on that front. Depending on play style, you may like a more control package.

Ships

I only made 2 changes to the ship package that was originally admitted.  That was to take out the 2 Tellarite Patrol Ships for +1 Kazon Fighter and +1 Stolen Roundabout.  I feel like the Patrol Ships are more of a early game board control card.  They are great, but I want something more aggressive for this deck.  The Kazon Fighter is a great 3 drop that can also clear out a guardian if need be.  You are always playing ships with this deck, so the Stolen Roundabout is usually a 3/2 on your turn, which I prefer over a 2/3 in here.

Results

My final list is as follows:

Elim Garak 1*
Rom 1*
Batlh Class 2
Grebnedlog 1
Maquis Raider 2
Vixis 1
Ardra 1
Bird of Prey 2
Gorn 1
IKS Qu’Vat 1
Jach Class 2
J’dan 1
Kor 1*
Stolen Runabout 1
B’rel Bird of Prey 2
IKS Ning’tao 1
Kazon Fighter 2
IKS Chang 1*
K’t’inga Battlecruiser 2
Val Jean 1*
Augment Bird of Prey 1*
Kazon Troop Carrier 2

I worked myself up to rank 8 with this version before I stopped playing it, only losing once to a mirror match.  Is this better than Huntersorce’s list?  Not at all.  It’s just a slightly different take on an amazing deck that he already created.  I hope this gives everyone a few takes on the Negh’Var to help you create your own deck to wreak havoc throughout the galaxy.

And, thanks again to Huntersorce for creating and sharing this great deck with the rest of us. I look forward to seeing what he is able to do with future decks.

Let us know if you’ve had success with this deck or have a different take on some of the card choices in the comments below.

I may have to try this out. I’ve got the majority of these cards but (surprise, surprise) I’m missing most of the Legendaries. If I can nab them, I’ll give this a spin.

like veers says, the crew ledgendaries are variable and can be swapped based on any that you already have (kurn, kruge, kor, rom, garak, and even kes are all viable choices). the ships are more rigid, since this is an aggressive deck you want the cheapest cost ships possible that are still useful, since most times if a game lasts to turn 10 its gone too long. iks duras is the only other ship I considered for a slot when I created the deck, but decided against it since i was, and still am, fighting many fed haste decks. if the meta becomes more control, swap in the iks duras for the augment BoP.
