Sick Bay #4 – Connie Refit from CaptnBellamy

The next patient in the Sick Bay was submitted by CaptnBellamy and his Constitution Class Refit deck.  This is a very popular deck, as can be seen in our weekly Warp Level rankings, as voted on by the community, here.  The main questions is, how do you build it to be able to compete with the faster NX and Negh’Var decks?  I think we can definitely give some suggestions to help out.

CaptnBellamy mentioned in his submission that his legendary supply is limited, which is OK.  We’ll give some suggestions based on what he has, and some suggestions on cards to work towards if he chooses to continue with this deck, and for other players looking to build a Connie Refit deck.

I think this is the perfect number of crew for a deck that does not generate it’s own ships with its abilities.  In those cases you can pushed to 10 even, but this is a good number for a Refit deck.

I love Christine Chapel in a deck that is heavy on Guardians, which this one is, and most Federation decks are.  She’s cheap to play and offers great stat bonuses to both attack and health.  Wesley Crusher is also a great choice in any deck.

The Refit’s ability leads to a more board control type of game.  For that reason, I would lean towards more of a board control set of crew cards.  I would take out Bareil, Hugh and the Keeper and put in Gorn and Travis Mayweather.  The third slot is more of a flex spot, that can depend on the final deck.  You can use something like Reyga to give a ship Modulating Shields.  He adds +2 to the health of a ship, which is great on a guardian.  Most of the ships in here already have guardian, so Hugh adding it is redundant in many cases.  You could also play something like Nog or Sarek, to generate some card advantage.

As for the legendary crew, CaptnBellamy said he also owns Kira and Khan, at the time of his submission.  I would personally take out Borg Queen for Kira.  They do the same thing, but Kira is free to play.  In practice, you probably only want to play Borg Queen once per game anyway, so use the free one.  I would also take out Uhura for Khan.  Uhura costs 5 energy and needs a full board to really be effective.  Khan is a little more situational, but stealing an enemy ship is such a huge tempo swing in this game.

With a full collection, I would Use Riker/Chakotay in one spot.  I like Beverly Crusher better than Bones.  She costs half as much, and essentially does the same thing, only she can also add to a ship with full health instead of only damaged ships.  I also love Dax.  She generates so much card advantage, it can get to be hard to manage all the cards you can draw from her.  On top of that, she adds +3 health for only 2 energy.  She is a great card.

Ships

Type 7 Shuttlecraft 2
Bajoran Escort 2
Kazon Raider 2
NX Class Starship 1
Type 15 Shuttlepod 2
Miranda Class Starship 2
Sh’Raan Research Cruiser 1
USS Merrimac NCC-61827 1
Nebula Class Starship 2
USS Reliant NCC-1864 1
USS Saratoga NCC-1887 1
Val Jean 1*
Kumari 1*
USS Glenn NCC-1030 1
USS Valiant NCC-74210 1
USS Enterprise NCC-1701-D 1*

With few buff cards, Kazon Raider is just too weak.  It does to anything and doesn’t kill much.  Sh’Raan Cruiser is too understatted for it’s cost.  Gaining 4 life is great, but there are better ways to do it that can also effect the board in a more positive way.  I would say that there are not enough crew to reliable take advantage of the USS Valiant.  I would rather see something like a Borg Sphere in that spot for the same cost.  That would more reliable get a 2 for 1.

In general, I would make sure any conditional cards are good enough to play when the condition isn’t met.  Or at least aren’t bad.  The Nebula Class Starship and the USS Saratoga, for example.  They are both understatted for their cost, and both can be stuck with not using their effects. One example is the Excelsior Class Starship.  A 2/4 with Guardian is now horrible for 4 energy, if you were to top deck it with no other ships on the board.

I am typically more of a Klingon player, so there may be others out there that can tweak better.  I think this should be a solid list though that should fit well with what the Refit has to offer.  I’m sure people will argue my choices of Dax and Crusher.  I feel they both offer great value for their cost, but I’d love to hear what other people use in those slots in the comments!  Thanks for reading
