Sick Bay #5 – Galaxy Class from Tpoletta’s

Our next patient has made their way to the Sick Bay on the backs of the Galaxy Class flagship.  Thanks to Tpoletta for allowing our medical team to examine this deck and offer some suggestions.

The Galaxy Class is an interesting flagship in the current meta.  There are a couple of different ways to play this flagship.  The first is to go wide and keep your board full as much as possible using the basic ability and the core card Operational Advantage.   Another strategy that I find to be very fun is turbo Auxiliary strategy.  By using crew like Scotty, Stamets and Charles Tucker you can set off your Ultimate ability as fast and as often as possible using lots of guardians to protect these ships.  Here you just manage the board while your Heavy Escort continually does 5 damage per turn.

I’ll focus on the first one for now, and, in the future, we can take a dive into the second.

Wesley Crusher 1
Harry Kim 1
Michael Burnham 1 *
Reginald Barclay 1
Nyota Uhura 1 *
Tuvok 1 *

Focusing on the basic ability and going wide with our board means we can support more crew than a typical deck.  This deck is starting with 10 crew.  We can argue that 10 is ok, but I want to make sure they are the right 10 and, definitely, no more than 10.  The first thing I would like to do is focus the crew a little more.

The Galaxy Class flagship is not an aggro flagship, so my first cut would be Ruk.  Sorry buddy, but you fit better in other decks.  I’m also not a huge fan of Reyga.  He’s OK but not amazing, so I will take him out also.

I would also pull Harry Kim.  He’s amazing in certain decks, like Miranda, but it’s hard to take advantage of him at the same level in a Galaxy deck.

With Wesley Crusher and 2 Runabouts I think Hirogen Beta can be a good fit, so I will add him.

Now for the Legendaries.  I’m comfortable with Burnham on my team here.  She is great for wide decks since she buffs 2 ships and is repeatable, of course.  Uhura is very expensive and is not always guaranteed to be impactful.  Lastly, Tuvok has the same problem as Kim.  His effect is one of the best in the game, but it can be hard to take advantage of in this deck, so I would like to find replacements for those two crew.

Every ship needs a good captain, and I think Picard could have a place here.  With a wide board, even of just 2/2 shuttles, Picard is amazing value.  Probably the best in the game.  I think his presence will be felt much more than Uhura’s.

What good is a captain without a first class number one?  I think Riker would work really well alongside his captain.  He’s great at dealing with fast NX decks and can boost your ship however you need.

The final crew I will bring with me is as follows:

Gorn 1
Travis Mayweather 1
William Riker 1 *
Hirogen Beta
Wesley Crusher 1
Michael Burnham 1 *
Reginald Barclay 1
Jean-Luc Picard 1 *

Ships

Ferengi Research Shuttle 1
Maquis Raider 1
Type 15 Shuttlepod 2
Miranda Class Starship 2
Danube Runabout 2
Excelsior Class Starship 2
USS Yorktown NCC-1717 1
Val Jean 1 *
Galaxy Class Starship 2
USS Odyssey NCC-71832 1
D’Kyr Class 2
USS Challenger NCC-71099 1
USS Discovery NCC-1031 1 *
USS Enterprise NCC-1701-D 1 *

The first ship I am going to pull is the Yorktown.  I want more value for 4 energy and there are already a  bunch of guardians in here, plus you can make more with the core card Type 15 Tactical Pod.  The next ship to get the axe is the Ferengi Research Shuttle.  I prefer not having to rely on other things happening to make my ships decent.

I want to add a second Maquis Raider.  They are great for dealing with small haste ships. Then, for the Yorktown, I am putting in a Hirogen Heavy Warship.  It has great stats for its cost and is fantastic when followed up with an Excelsior Class Starship.  This is a great example of what I mentioned earlier.  The Warship is great on its own and gets amazing with other cards compared to the Research Shuttle which is mediocre on its own and OK with other cards.

I am also going to make the tough decision to cut the Discovery.  Its effect is good, but for 8 energy, that late in the game, it’s not as impactful as I would like.  I find the Borg Cube to be a game breaker these days.  Much more so than the Discovery for 2 more energy.  The Enterprise-D is so powerful, so I will definitely keep that.  A well-timed Val Jean is also incredibly devastating so it is always safe to play with.

This puts my final ship list as this:

Maquis Raider 2
Type 15 Shuttlepod 2
Hirogen Heavy Warship 1
Miranda Class Starship 2
Danube Runabout 2
Excelsior Class Starship 2
Val Jean 1 *
Galaxy Class Starship 2
USS Odyssey NCC-71832 1
D’Kyr Class 2
USS Challenger NCC-71099 1
USS Enterprise NCC-1701-D 1 *
Borg Cube 1*

New Full Decklist

Maquis Raider 2
Type 15 Shuttlepod 2
Hirogen Heavy Warship 1
Miranda Class Starship 2
Danube Runabout 2
Excelsior Class Starship 2
Val Jean 1
Galaxy Class Starship 2
USS Odyssey NCC-71832 1
D’Kyr Class 2
USS Challenger NCC-71099 1
USS Enterprise NCC-1701-D 1
Borg Cube 1
Gorn 1
Travis Mayweather 1
William Riker 1
Hirogen Beta
Wesley Crusher 1
Michael Burnham 1
Reginald Barclay 1
Jean-Luc Picard 1

I think with this list we can take advantage of the Galaxy Class Flagship’s ability to generate a large amount of ships that have the tools to deal with ships and boards of all sizes.  A card I would like to fit in is the D’Kyr Destroyer but I would need more testing to see what could come out for it.  If you take this Galaxy Class out for a spin maybe you can find space for it.  I think it’s a great card in this meta, and with cards like Wesley Crusher and Runabout.

Let me know in the comments below if you would make some different changes.  One of the great things about this game, and CCGs in general, is how everyone can put their own personal touch on every deck.  I’d love to see what yours would be.

Good luck and have fun!

I know this is an old article to be commenting on, but your final decklist only has 28 cards, not 30.
